Trouble at t'mill
During the Industrial Revolution (1750-1900), many people went to the towns to work in the new factories. The hours were long and for lots of people the working conditions were very bad. The pay was low and children and well as adults worked in mills and factories. One Manchester mill owner said, "I never knowingly employed children under the age of 9". However it was very common for children as young as 5 to be found working in a factory.
Look at the cutaway picture of the cotton mill and see if you can find and circle some of the people who worked there. As an extension you could imagine yourself as one of the people you find in the picture and write a paragraph about how they feel.
